Is a prism sight better than a red dot? ›

A prism sight or prismatic sight, sometimes also called prism scope or prismatic scope, is a type of telescopic sight which uses a reflective prism for its image-erecting system, instead of the series of relay lenses found in traditional telescopic sights.

Prism scopes provide great eye relief. While the unlimited eye relief on red dot sights is hard to beat, 1x prism scopes provide a similar, if not the same, degree of eye relief. Green light is closer to the peak sensitivity of the human eye's photopic response, making green dot sights more visible than red. This means that in varying lighting conditions, from bright daylight to low-light settings, the green dot remains highly visible and easy to acquire.

Red dots are great for close-quarters with quick target acquisition up to around 100yds, while riflescopes with magnification are better for precision at longer ranges. The decision boils down to how far you'll be engaging your targets.

On a rifle, when one can get an ideal cheek weld, red dots are fasters than lasers. However, when wearing a gas mask, shooting around barriers, or other non-ideal situations, lasers are faster. Why? Without an ideal cheek weld, it takes more time to acquire the red dot after presenting.

While prism scopes do come with a wealth of advantages, they're not without their limitations. The biggest of these is their limited magnification. Because prism scopes use a solid glass prism rather than moveable lenses, their magnification level is fixed, as we discussed previously.

Most shooters find they can shoot more accurately with a red dot than with iron sights, particularly at distance and when speed is an issue. With the dot, you can easily “holdover” for longer shots, while still seeing the entire target in the window.

Are prism sights good for astigmatism? ›

Astigmatism can be detrimental to using an optic when shooting, causing the reticle in red dots to become distorted or misshaped. Prism scopes and other optics with etched reticles make up for these shortcomings, making it easier for enthusiasts with astigmatism to be able to effectively use their optics.

Instead, the reticle is etched into the lens of the optic itself. This offers one huge advantage: you can use a prism without a battery (although many also feature a battery to illuminate the reticle in dark conditions). One of the traits that differentiates a prism sight from red dots is magnification.

What does it mean if the dot is not a dot? If the dot in your optic doesn't look perfectly round, the distortion may be caused by the way your eye is perceiving the reflection of the LED inside the red dot, making it appear misshapen. When a prism is part of your prescription and worked into your lenses, your glasses will look like any other prescription eyeglasses. The only difference is that prism lenses are sometimes noticeably thicker than standard lenses.
